Substance Exposed Newborns

We aim to improve care for newborns affected by perinatal substance exposure through exploration of evidence-based practice and standardization of care.

Introduction

The “Newborns with Perinatal Substance Exposure” focus group was started in 2023. The group is comprised of neonatologists, general pediatricians, advanced practice providers, neonatal nurses, trainees, and data abstractors, all with an interest in the short and long-term effects of in-utero substance exposure.

Mission & Goals

The mission of the CHNC Newborns with Perinatal Substance Exposure focus group is to improve care for all newborns affected by perinatal substance exposure through exploration of evidence-based best practice and standardization of care.

Goals:
1) establish a standard definition for NAS/NOWS throughout CHNC hospitals
2) explore current management strategies and inter-center variations in practice
3) examine variability in short and long-term outcomes
4) define best-practices at top-performing centers
5) develop evidence-based guidelines to promote standardization of practices and reduce variability
6) engage parents and caregivers in establishing and implementing guidelines
