Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy

The HIE Focus Group leverages the CHND to investigate clinical practice and patient-specific factors to improve outcomes in neonatal HIE.

Introduction

The HIE focus group is one of the earliest focus groups formed within the CHNC, beginning work in 2013. Since its inception, its membership has continued to expand and now includes nearly 30 active neonatology faculty members across various centers participating in CHNC.  The group is comprised of neonatologists with an interest in neonatal neurology and neuroprotection, neonatal nurses, advanced practice providers and data abstractors; with ad hoc involvement of developmental specialists and biostatistical support.

Mission & Goals

The vision of the group is to achieve the delivery of consistent, high-quality optimal brain care for neonates with HIE across the CHNC and beyond. The group’s mission is to improve the care and outcomes for infants with HIE through sharing of data and benchmarking, research, and development of safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Accomplishments

The HIE focus group has leveraged the rich data collected within the CHND to fill gaps in the understanding of inter-center variation in management and outcomes of neonates with HIE in real-world practice and has disseminated this information through scientific presentations and publications (see list below). The HIE focus group has also collaborated with the ECMO focus group for common projects. Future directions and goals of the group include engaging with family advocacy groups, development of educational materials and fostering mentorship of trainees with interest in neonatal neuroprotection.
