Delirium and Sedation

To better characterize neonatal and infant delirium, standardize the screening, prevention, and management of infants with delirium, and improve outcomes of infants that experience delirium.

Mission

To improve overall awareness, understanding, and management of at-risk infants with delirium through multicenter, multidisciplinary collaboration.

Goals/Aims
  1. To explore current processes and practices for screening, prevention, and management of delirium in Level IV NICUs. Participating CHNC centers are in a unique position to describe delirium in this population given the high incidence of aging and complex newborns and infants.
  2. To better understand inter-center variation in screening, prevention, and management of delirium in infants admitted to a NICU.
  3. To create a collaborative to allow multicenter quality improvement and research projects to improve delirium detection and prevention in NICUs.
  4. Over time, we hope to collaborate with other CHNC focus groups that involve populations at increased risk for delirium such as infants with BPD or congenital heart disease to develop or improve targeted screening and prevention.
